Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR):
ADO for Women and Children is a member of the Sendai DRR NGO Major Group, a group of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in disaster risk reduction activities in Sendai, Japan.
The Sendai DRR NGO Major Group plays a vital role in promoting the Sendai vision for disaster risk reduction through an integrated framework that represents a global agreement aimed at reducing the impact of disasters and building resilient, resilient communities.
Abs contributes to disaster risk reduction responses in various ways through collaboration and coordination of efforts in this area, including various groups and technical working groups. Activities can be summarized as follows:
Risk Assessment and Information Services (Forecasts) [including early warning systems]:
ADO has conducted numerous risk assessments, including a post-flood assessment that destroyed shelters and impacted vulnerable people in Abs-Tihama (the floods that occurred in late June and July 2020 in the Tihama region, including the Abs area);
This was to illustrate the impact of the damage suffered by displaced families in the city of Abs and Khairan Al Muharraq, which required rapid and direct intervention to mitigate the exacerbation of the suffering of the displaced.
Emergency Preparedness Planning (EPP) with local partners: During the COVID-19 outbreak, Abs Organization developed effective and comprehensive preparedness plans as part of its work within the field of disaster risk reduction.
Proactive Humanitarian Action: Early Warning – Early Action (AHA) / (EW-EA):
One of the most prominent roles played by Abs Organization was during the cholera outbreak, where the organization participated in the early detection system through community engagement, while simultaneously investigating the underlying causes of the disease’s spread, such as water sources, to address and prevent them.
