Deaf-Mute Education and Training

Deaf-Mute Education and Training (Oxfam)/Abs:

In 1998, we focused on expanding opportunities for vulnerable groups and strengthening livelihoods in Abs district in Hajjah governorate. Through strategic education and livelihood programs, ADO worked to promote independence and empower individuals and communities.
The Deaf and Dumb Education and Training Project has had a significant impact on the lives of 365 individuals, with 120 males and 245 females participating.

This initiative provided specialized education and training for the hearing and speech impaired, enabling them to gain essential skills for personal growth and community participation.

By focusing on inclusion and equal access to education, we helped break down barriers and promote community participation for people with disabilities.
Sign language classes: The project provided intensive sign language classes for deaf and dumb people, as well as for their families and community members who wish to communicate with them, which promoted interaction and communication and contributed to their inclusion in society.

Teaching basic academic skills: The project included customized lessons in reading, writing, and arithmetic, designed to suit the abilities of the deaf and dumb, where teachers used visual and interactive teaching aids.
Awareness sessions and training for parents: Awareness sessions were organized for parents on how to support their deaf and dumb children in the home environment, as well as guidance on the use of sign language in daily life.
Self-confidence-building activities: The project offered workshops and activities aimed at developing self-confidence, such as mime plays and art shows, which helped participants express themselves in creative ways.

Customized vocational training: The project included training programs in craft and vocational skills that match the needs of the labor market, such as handicrafts, knitting, and product design, which provided them with sustainable job opportunities.
Sports and recreational activities: The project included organizing sports and recreational activities for deaf and dumb people, such as team sports, painting and handicrafts, to promote social communication and psychological well-being.
The project contributed to improving the quality of life of deaf and dumb people by enhancing education and employment opportunities for them, and providing an interactive environment that helps them overcome the challenges they face. The project also helped reduce their social isolation, promote their integration into society, and increase community awareness about their needs and capabilities, paving the way towards a more inclusive and accepting society.
