Under the war circumstances, residents of Qutbah sub-district have always struggled to secure enough safe drinking water, as they were fed by a single well that serves 11 villages. Unfortunately, this well is salty and unfit for drinking; and causes many diseases. Almost, the beneficiaries were relied on a high cost purchasing water. As the conflict escalated, the coming IDPs to Qutbah sub-district caused more pressure on the limited source of water, and increasing the cost of purchasing water which unaffordable for the both host community (HC) and Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Therefore, most of the them were forced to fetch water from the salty well; so diarrheal and kidney diseases have broken out among them, and the health situation deteriorates.
ADO has responded throughout a comprehensive WASH intervention, to alleviate suffering of the 7,897 from girls, boys, women and men including PWSNs in Abs and Khairan Al Muharraq districts, Hajjah Governorate. ADO response included a solution to the unhealthy and salty well problem via construction and installation of a water purification station powered by solar energy with SDG7; to provide the most sustainable drinking water for the most affected people from IDPs and HCs funded by DKH, in coordination with the local authority and the GARWSP. It is benefitting 3,885 individuals, operates for 10 hours a day and pumps at a rate of 1500 liters per hour. To ensure the sustainability, a community committee was formed to manage, operate and maintenance the water purification station; which has contributed to solving much of the suffering of the most vulnerable people via securing a sustainable source of safe drinking water.
